# Inside a Historic Glasgow Flat with a 1950s Secret

When Kate and Sandy made an offer on this top-floor tenement in Glasgow’s West End, they put a note with it.

Sandy is an architect, Kate is a historian, and they wanted to make it a family home. That sentence — short as it was — persuaded the previous owner to accept their offer over higher ones.

Douglas had lived in the flat for 46 years. When they visited him at the care home to say thank you, he told them it had been his first love.

They didn’t want to erase that. What followed was not so much a renovation as a repair: slow, thoughtful, and full of discovery. Cornicing stripped back by hand. Floors sanded room by room; wiring replaced. The layers peeled away one by one, each revealing more of what the flat had always been.

And then, one dark November evening, six months in, Kate was stripping the wallpaper from the living room walls. Exhausted, surrounded by dust and chaos, she suddenly noticed something underneath. Not plaster, not a doodle.

Something that would later become the focal point of the flat.
